Sleep apnea disorder is an oral health condition linked to interrupted breathing patterns while you sleep. Because sleep apnea often goes untreated due to difficulties in spotting symptoms of its existence, you could suffer for years before knowing anything is even wrong. This is dangerous because if you suffer from sleep apnea, you are at an increased risk for serious conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, heart attack, stroke, and even death.

The most common forms of sleep apnea are obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. With obstructive sleep apnea, your airway and breathing patterns are hindered due to nasal blockages. This can result due to laying improperly while you sleep, genetic defects, or if you simply suffer from not having air easily enter your mouth. With central sleep apnea, the signals that are sent from your brain to your chest facilitating the muscles to move and aid in breathing while asleep, do not reach their intended sources. Both forms can have severe consequences if not resolved.

Common risk factors for sleep apnea include historical genetic predispositions, allergies, sinus problems, oversized tonsils, a large tongue, a deviated septum, a small jaw, and other issues that may prevent breathing properly as you sleep.
